HAPPY CHILDRENS DAY - by Obed Khan (Vowel Education Academy)

Children Day or Bal Diwas, in Hindi, is a day when students across schools in India indulge in various recreational activities and merrymaking. Children’s Day is celebrated in India as a tribute to Jawaharlal Nehru who was born on November 14, 1889. The day continues to be a special for children as they are showered with gifts, and more importantly, a lot of attention.
However, before India’s independence in 1947, Children’s Day was celebrated on November 20, the day observed by the United Nations as universal Children’s Day. But after Nehru’s death in 1964, it was unanimously decided to celebrate Children’s Day on the birthday of the first Prime Minister as a tribute to his love for children.

The day emphasises on the importance of giving love, attention and affection to children. “The children of today will make the India of tomorrow. The way we bring them up will determine the future of the country,” said Nehru. The main purpose of this day is to encourage the welfare of children all over the country.

And Teachers have a great responsibility and opportunity to make our students contributors to the welfare of our country India, not only as excellent performers but even as good, morally upright, kind and exemplary humanbeings. Today, on Children’s day we re-examine our commitment towards achieving this Goal. Happy Children’s Day from VOWEL EDUCATION ACADEMY

The art of Motivating your Students

(By Obed Khan Teacher / trainer / life coach)

One of the greatest challenges Teachers face is motivating students. While it is true that as teachers we have little control over external factors that influence our students’ behavior and engagement, we do play a vital role in shaping what occurs in our classroom. In fact, our instructional choices can make a positive impact on student motivation.

It is very important to provide teachers with a general understanding of student motivation from a psychological perspective and to know specific strategies to help motivate students in the classroom. As teachers, we can create an optimal classroom environment that is conducive to learning, and research suggests this is most effectively achieved through instructional behaviors and course design. That means how you teach and what you teach.

Teachers very well know that motivated students are easier to teach. So how do teachers motivate their students? Here are some practiced, tried and tested strategies to get your students interested in learning.....

1.       Know your students' names and use their names as often as possible.
2.      Vary your instructional strategies; use lectures, demonstrations, discussions, case studies, and more.
3.      Make your classes relevant. Be sure students see how the content relates to them and the world around them.
4.      Plan your class….without a proper lesson-plan you are making your job difficult.
5.      Encourage students to share their ideas and comments, even if they are incorrect. You'll never know what students don't understand unless you ask them.ie Involve your students in your teaching in every possible way.
And even your personal approach, your body language, your empathy for the students is very important
6.      Show enthusiasm.Be expressive. Smile.
7.      Put some excitement into your speech; vary your pitch, volume and rate.
8.     Maintain eye contact and move toward your students as you interact with them. Nod your head to show that you are listening to them. Move around the room as you teach.
9.      Be consistent in your treatment of students
10.  Be available before class starts, during break, and after class to visit with students.

Through your own behavior, course design and teaching practices, you can create classroom conditions that encourage engagement and motivation to learn on a variety of levels. So Teachers…… motivate your students towards SUCCESS.

SCREEN DEPENDENCY DISORDER IS REAL
This is the gift of modern technology. It is real, it is on the rise and it is damaging your child’s brain. Screen dependency disorder, which is closely related to Internet addiction disorder is playing havoc with the life of our children. We are witnessing a growing trend of addictions to what I would like to call demoralising desires and temporary pleasures.
As parents, you need to understand what screen addiction is. Screen addiction is when too much screen usage makes a child completely lost in it and they end up feeling that screens alone will make them happy. They reach a point where they always want to go back to it every time their hands are free! Screen addiction today is also called digital heroin – which means it’s as bad as drugging a child. It ruins relationships within the family, children get into a cocoon, conflicts arise, etc.

Physiological impairment

Here are some impacts of too much screen time on a child’s physiology:
1) Causes headaches- Prolonged exposure to bright blue light coming from the screen  generally induce headaches in children.  The underlying problem is that, constant headaches decrease a child’s ability to concentrate and perform tasks efficiently.
2) Leads to poor vision- I think you’ll agree that the number of children wearing spectacles nowadays is much more than that during our childhood.
3) Decline in physical activity- With tonnes of interesting and engaging content available on screen, physical activity will seem more of a task to children.
4) Affects posture- Excess time in front of gadgets affect your child’s posture. It forces your child to remain in unhealthy postures for prolonged periods, resulting in severe neck pain
5) Causes obesity- According to American Heart Association, 1 in 3 children are obese. Obesity is a major health-related problem arising due to excess screen time.
6) Causes irregular sleep cycle- Another problematic aspect of too much screen time is that they have been shown to disrupt sleep. This causes the child to keep on tossing and turning around, unable to fall asleep. Lack of sleep or irregular sleep affects a child’s sleep cycle, daily routine, and in turn, his/her health.

Psychological impairment

Ever noticed how irritated a child gets when you take him/her off the screen? That’s because they are being denied the stimulating experience that screens provide.

1) Takes a toll on imagination- Imagination and creativity are an integral part of your child’s development.

2) Unable to tolerate losses- Most activities on the screen like games make life simpler and are more attractive for your child. So, whenever faced with a loss or an unfavourable result, he/she always has a choice to restart, sparing the disappointment of a loss.

3) Gives way to anxiety & depression- A child who spends more time on screen is prone to be either anxious or depressed when asked to get off screen — you may have already seen this yourself.

4) Increases violence- A child who plays a lot of violent games is said to imbibe and imitate what he/she sees.
For example: if a kid plays a lot of action games, he/she will constantly be seen punching, hitting, or shooting imaginary opponents. However, the problem is that, involuntarily the child becomes rude, agitated, and often picks up fights with siblings, friends, classmates.

5) Leads to lesser social interaction- The worst effect of tv/gadgets on children is perhaps social disconnection. Research also shows that too much screen time also causes speech delay — which means, the more the screen time for your child, the longer it will take for their speech to develop!

And that’s not all… Screens trigger the reward mechanism or the pleasure parts in the brain – which makes the child more addicted. The reason this occurs is that screens in whichever form – tabs, smartphones, TV, video games, etc. are extremely stimulating.
                                              Health Hazards
In the recent years, there has been a lot of speculation about the impact of cell phone radiation on our body. A study by The Journal of the American Medical Association stirred the debate when it investigated the repercussion the mobile phones could have on the brain activity. The possible health hazards of mobile phones for children are as follows:
Non-Malignant Tumors: The study has shown that children who use mobile phones have a possibility of developing non-malignant tumor in the brain and ear.
Cancer:- The WHO has classified cell phone radiation as ‘possibly carcinogenic to humans’. Children absorb more than 60 percent of the radiation into the brain than adults. Their brain’s thinner skin, tissues, and bones allow them to absorb the radiation twice than the grown-ups.
Effects On The Brain: Scientists have discovered that just 2 minutes of the phone call can alter the electoral activity of the kid’s brain for up to an hour.
As a parent, you must take preventive measures to minimize your child’s exposure to the harmful effects of mobile phones. Here are some simple steps  to help you battle these addictions.
1. Parental teamwork- It is absolutely essential for parents to discuss and decide how to tackle this situation together as a team.

2. Monitor what your child is watching- Keep home entertainment in a shared area of the house to watch with them as often as possible. It’s not about ‘not trusting’ them. It’s about protecting them from things they don’t know.

3. Have clear rules- Agree on time limits for logging on, playing, messaging, etc. each day and stick to them, no matter how much they nag or cry; don’t give in just to silence them.
4. Address online stranger dangers- You may feel like you’re scaring your kids when talking to them about the dangers of being online, but it’s better for them to be scared than to be unaware.
6. Inculcate time for books- As your child begins learning to read and write, this will require them to slow down their mind.
7. Play games with them- Children love to play and be amused. Computer game manufacturers have subtly hijacked the language of play.
8. Practice what you preach- Be honest. Are you spending more time with your laptop/phone than with your family? Are your kids just imitating you?  Switch off your laptop and put your phone on silent when sharing time with your family. Set times when you will check email and messages, and stick to them.
9. Provide alternatives- Do you feel it’s too late and your child is already too addicted that they may throw tantrums when you change the rules? Maybe it’s turned into a default activity simply because there’s nothing else to do.
Practical Mobile Phone Safety Tips for Kids:
·         Do not give cell phone if your child is under 16 years. A child’s brain is too sensitive to withstand the effects of mobile radiation.
·         Do not let your child hold a mobile phone directly up to his head.
·         Do not let your child make calls in buses, trains, cars, and elevators. The mobile phone works harder to get the signal out through the metal, which increases the power level.
·         Do not let your child use cell phone when the signal is weak. It will increase the power to the maximum, as the phone attempts to connect to a new relay antenna.
·         Limit the use of cell phone around children.
·         Do not let children take mobile phones to school.
·         Do not leave mobile phones in your children’s bedroom at night.

So these are the harmful effects of mobile phones on children. What changes have you made in your child’s cell phone usage considering these potential health risks? Please share with the other Parents and Teachers and even your children.

1st October International Day of Older Persons

The International Day of Older Persons is observed on October 1each year. On December 14, 1990 the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons as recorded in Resolution 45/106. The holiday was observed for the first time on October 1, 1991.

WHAT DOES ISLAM SAY ABOUT THE ELDERS?
In Islam every day is the elder persons day. I prefer to say Elder persons instead of Older persons. The rights of parents over their children may be summed up as treating them well in all matters, and behaving with them kindly as Allah says

“And We have enjoined on man to be dutiful and kind to his parents”

[al-Ahqaaf 46:15]

“And We have enjoined on man to be dutiful and kind to his parents”

[al-‘Ankaboot 29:8]

“but behave with them in the world kindly”

[Luqmaan 31:15]

“be dutiful and kind to parents” means: treat them kindly in all ways, in word and in deed.

One of the most important acts of worship that the child is asked to do with regard to his parents is to obey them, to do as they ask and to refrain from what they tell him not to do. So if his father tells him to do something, he hastens to do what he is told, and if he tells him not to do something, he hastens to give it up, so long as that does not involve any disobedience towards Allaah and his Messenger, because there is no obedience to any created being if itinvolves disobedience towards the Creator.

Then he can make du'a for them and pray for forgiveness for them, especially when they grow old and weak and are in need of someone to treat them kindly and take care of their needs. Allaah says:

“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour.

24. And lower unto them the wing of submission and humility through mercy, and say: ‘My Lord! Bestow on them Your Mercy as they did bring me up when I was young’”

[al-Isra’ 17:23-24]
The Prophet of Islam, said that one if the righteous thing to do after your parents have passed away is to treat your fathers friends in a gracious manner.
It was narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Dinaar from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar that a man from among the Bedouins met him on the road to Makkah. ‘Abd-Allaah greeted him with salaam, seated him on the donkey that he was riding and gave him a turban that he had been wearing on his head. Ibn Dinar said: We said to him: May Allaah guide you, they are just Bedouins and they would be content with little. ‘Abd-Allaah said: The father of this man was a friend of ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab and I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “The best act of kindness is for the son to uphold ties (of friendship) with those who were his father’s friends.” Narrated by Muslim, 2552
According to the above verse, gratitude to God and to parents go hand in hand. Gratitude to God is incomplete without showing gratitude to one's parents. Since being grateful to God is a form of ibadah (worship) which earns heavenly rewards, it can therefore be said that being grateful to one's parents also earns heavenly rewards.

"Thy Lord hath decreed that ye worship none but Him, and that ye be kind to parents. Whether one or more attain old age in thy life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honor. And out of kindness, lower to them the wing of humility, and say, "my Lord! bestow on them Thy Mercy, even as they cherished me in childhood." (Quran 17: 23-24)

"We have enjoined on man kindness to his parents; in pain did his mother bear him, and in pain did she give him birth." (Quran 46:15)

Thus, God has enjoined on us to show kindness, respect, and humility to our parents.
What I want to stress today is the command of the Creator regarding Parents..... "do not say uff to them" ie do not say even a single word of disrespect.....
Happy Elders Day....

Unity in Diversity by Obed Khan (1 July, 2018, Kedarnath Auditorium, New Delhi)
Unity in Diversity....what does Islam say? The last and final testament of Almighty God mentions in Chapter no.49, verse 13 that the differences in peoples colour, race, languages, traditions etc are for identifying each other. It should not be a reason to hate each other.
Our religions should inspire us to unite as the creation of the one Almighty God who is mentioned in all the major religious scriptures. The realisation that our creator, sustainer and Lord is one should dawn upon us to make us united. Let us unite and make India one of the most peaceful and progressive country in the world.

ISLAMIC EDUCATION- The Parent's Role

Islamic Education- The Parent’s Role
Islamic education should be informative plus transformative. Attention…Parents … You are responsible for the education and upbringing of your child. Both the Qur’an and Sunnah point out that the Parents are responsible for their child’s moral and academic education.

In Surah At Tahreem, 66:6, Allah instructs “Save yourself and your family from the fire whose fuel are men and stones….”. And from many hadeeths we come to know that the Parents are responsible for their childs upbringing….. “Everyone of you is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock…..”
WHAT IS EDUCATION?
Education is the process of acquisition of knowledge, both theoretical and practical.
WHAT IS ISLAMIC EDUCATION?
Islamic Education is the process of acquisition of Islamic knowledge, both theoretical and practical, from the Qur’an and Sunnah.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF ISLAMIC EDUCATION?
The purpose of Islamic Education is to connect the Abd with his Rabb. In an Islamic School,  the subjects that are taught viz. Islamic Studies, Quranic studies, Hifz etc and even academic subjects like Science, Maths, Social Studies etc should bring the child closer to his Creator. If the Islamic Education does not fulfill this purpose then it is misguidance.
Unfortunately, there is a gap between what we expect the child to become and what he actually becomes. Many children fall short of the standards that are expected of them as students of an Islamic School. At the end of the day, many children if not all, don’t really like to read the Qur’an or offer Salah, they are too busy following the fashion dictates of the Sport stars and Film stars instead of following the Sunnah.
The problem lies in the fact that we are confused between Taleem and Tarbiyah. When the children need Tarbiyah, we give them an overdose of Taleem. Taleem is fact based education, knowledge, information that we provide the child. And Tarbiyah is that we train the child to like the knowledge which he gets. Tarbiyah is the process of the development of the child in such a away that he loves to practice what he is taught.
And this can be done only with the co-operation, active participation and commitment of the Parents. YOU CANNOT OUTSOURCE PARENTING. With the Parents realizing their role we can  make our children excellent and dynamic Muslims who can make a better Ummah in the future. And then eventually, we can create a peaceful and progressive society and Nation.
